It’s time to chill

Many conversations are ignited by the weather. This is hardly surprising considering our fondness for this topic and how cool, some might say pleasant, it has been for the past few days. And, as The National reported yesterday, cooler weather and cloud are expected to stubbornly sit over much of the country for the next couple of days.

Many residents will grimly tell you this is the coldest January they can recall, just as we often hear people talk about each summer being exceptionally hot or unusually humid.

But some of this commentary shows how fickle our collective memories are and how selective our use of historical weather data is. The average temperature at this time of year hovers around 18°C. The temperature at the time this editorial was written was 19°C. Plus ça change. For now, let’s enjoy the big chill and seize this opportunity to indulge in some outdoor activities – even if it is only reading this newspaper amid a stiff breeze and gathering clouds.
