It’s time to be scary

If there is one day when we have an opportunity to transform ourselves into what we are not – fairies, witches, wizards, zombies and superheroes – it’s Halloween.

Although it is a western tradition, the event has cast a spell on people of every age, region, culture and nationality. As The National's arts&life section highlighted yesterday, there will be plenty of ghoulish fun on offer in Abu Dhabi and Dubai today, where children and adults alike are expected to flock to "haunted" places and "spooky parties" at hotels, malls and beaches wearing masks and creepy costumes. However, it shouldn't be a time of actual distress and danger, as residents of France experienced recently. All over the country, criminals have been exploiting the mood of the season to disguise themselves as "evil clowns" to create panic. At least a dozen youths have been jailed by the authorities.

Halloween is all about light-hearted fun and being a little outrageous. We wish you a treat-filled day.
