This is the worst period in Syria’s long history

I write in reference to your article Rebel infighting in northern Syria intensifies as clashes spill into Idlib (January 4). This was not unexpected, as the fight has yet to die down. Yet more bloodshed might arise in the near future in Idlib. This is the worst period in Syrian history. The once beautiful country has become a bloody arena reminiscent of the gladiators in ancient Rome. World powers appear to be watching the show as though it were free entertainment.

African wildlife is at great risk if poaching is not curtailed

I refer to your podcast In Central African Republic, poaching thrives in the chaos (January 2): It is practically impossible to stop poaching in countries where politicians have no respect for their national treasure, the wildlife. If this continues then parts of the continent will be free of wildlife altogether. It must be protected now, and poachers should be punished.

The Democrats could yet lose the fight over the wall

I write in reference to your online article Donald Trump says he needs to deal with Democrat leaders to end shutdown (January 7): The Democrats will lose this fight. The issue of the wall is hardening attitudes against them and their two newly elected senators.

It’s time to solve the global scourge of terrorism

I refer to your editorial Stand firm with Copts under attack at Christmas (January 6). This meaningful and thought provoking article on the Coptic Orthodox Christian community and the solidarity extended by UAE's Copts was good to read. The recent bomb blast, which killed a brave policeman who was trying to defuse the device is undoubtedly a tragedy. Today, terror threats are widening across the world in a manner that is both unacceptable and hugely alarming. In Egypt, it is the Christians who have been most targeted. The question remains, will the international community come together to tackle this issue once and for all, or will tragedies of this kind continue to be perpetrated?

Cats are the ultimate proven pest controllers

I write in reference to your article Dubai tennants rattled rat menace as numbers spike (January 6). That is precisely why stray cats are essential. They help keep pests under control.

Lynn Taylor, UAE

Always keep cats around. They have been proven pest catchers fpr millenia and, of course, they are environmentally friendly.
