I write in reference to Gillian Duncan's article Dubai Eye radio presenter Malcolm Taylor dies (December 4): the radio show presenter was full of wisdom and knowledge and was a joy to listen to on the radio every morning.

Rest in peace, Malcolm Taylor.

Ordinary citizens should be able to go about their lives without fear

I write in reference to Jack Dutton's article London Bridge attack: 25-year-old Jack Merritt named as first victim (December 1): it broke my heart just looking at pictures of Jack Merritt, particularly the one in which he is seen holding his degree from Cambridge University. Perhaps it was because he was young and fresh-faced, and had his whole life ahead of him. On top of that, he was a course counsellor for an organisation that was holding a prisoner rehabilitation conference.

It should make everyone angry that ordinary citizens, whether they are going about their own business, or – as in Mr Merritt’s case – committed to helping those at the fringes of society, are targeted by terrorists.

The killer should not have been allowed to walk out of prison in the first place. I hope such dangerous elements of society are not only brought to justice but also monitored much more stringently so that people can go about their lives without having to constantly look over their shoulders.

Long-time residents of the UAE are also ambassadors for the country

I write in reference to Peter Hellyer's article Emirati students abroad are informal ambassadors for the UAE (December 2): overseas residents who have lived in the UAE are also very good ambassadors for the country. We lived there for 35 years. We are very grateful for the welcome and tolerance extended to us.
