Founder’s Memorial tribute to Sheikh Zayed is amazing

I write in reference to your report "He is the father of everyone": Founder's Memorial in honour of Sheikh Zayed opens in Abu Dhabi (February 26). Sheikh Zayed deserves all the rich tributes paid to him. He will always be in our hearts.

As long as the Houthis remain, Yemen is in peril

I refer to your heartfelt editorial In Yemen, a clarifying moment in conflict (February 24).  The horrendous fact is that Yemen is in grave danger while the Iranian-sponsored Houthis are still at large.

I used to visit Sanaa, Taiz and other places in Yemen on business every month for about two years before the Houthis took over Sanaa. Your editorial is accurate: it was a bustling, busy town. It is now desolate and abandoned.

The fear is that this conflict could also become protracted like the struggle in Syria. What will be the future of Yemeni children? They have been unable to go to school for the last two to three years. A whole generation risks being lost to this conflict. As the writer John Steinbeck once said, all war is a symptom of man’s failure as a thinking animal.

New phone models are released far too soon

I refer to your article Samsung Galaxy S9 first take: improved cameras lift minor update (February 25). Are they serious now? It seems as if I am never going to buy a new phone because I always want to buy the latest model and they keep releasing a newer one every two months or so.

Devis Jon, Abu Dhabi

No need to buy the Galaxy S9 as you can have the Galaxy S10 in six months from now.

The international community should eradicate Boko Haram

I refer to your article Nigeria confirms 110 girls missing after Boko Haram school attack (26 February). The Nigerian government's confirmation that 110 girls are missing after a recent attack by Boko Haram was sad to read. That Boko Haram is still kidnapping girls from schools in Nigeria is unacceptable. The international community should intervene to bring Boko Haram to account for its brutal acts. The organisation should be eradicated. Will the Nigerian government take up this issue with the international community?

There are so many interesting stories to tell about the UAE

In reference to your article Netflix announces first ambitious Arabic original series that could shoot in the UAE (February 26): I think the UAE has enough interesting stories to tell. I would love a series about the first maternity hospital in Al Ain, for example.

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
