Don’t lose hope for the trapped Thai football team

I write in reference to your article Thai diver drowns during cave rescue mission (July 6): it is sad that a Thai navy diver has lost his life in the perilous rescue mission in Thailand. With heavy rains threatening in the area, the rescue mission is now under even greater pressure. The rescuers should seriously look at the option of boring another hole from a point on top of the mountain, so the young children do not have to swim and dive for five hours through some very narrow passages. The arrival of engineers from Elon Musk should also help to devise any new possibilities for the rescue.

Finally, although the Thai navy Seals are doing a commendable job, I wonder if it might be useful to get some advice and assistance from American navy Seals too. We must never give up hope.

Mineur’s appointment is a symbol of change in Saudi

In reference to your exclusive Why the first female ambassador in Saudi Arabia thinks the UAE got gender equality right (July 6), after serving four years in the UAE as Belgium's ambassador, Dominique Mineur will be posted to Saudi Arabia. This is a very positive development. The Belgian government has rightly nominated Ms Mineur for the post, in recognition of her experience and the fact that Saudi Arabia is reforming and giving greater rights to its women.

We need greater awareness around genetic screening

I refer to the article Genetic disorders don't have to be 'your destiny', experts say ahead of international conference in Dubai (July 2): There needs to be more education out there for lay people to understand the importance of genetic screening. At the moment, it is one of the specialties that have extremely high no-show rates for screening appointments.

Investing in property doesn’t always pay off in reality

I am writing in reference to the article Why property is a good investment if you take out a mortgage (July 3): what if the value of the house goes down to half instead of doubling and the buyer is left with a mortgage? Leverage sadly works in both directions.

The Energy Research Centre

Founded 50 years ago as a nuclear research institute, scientists at the centre believed nuclear would be the “solution for everything”.
Although they still do, they discovered in 1955 that the Netherlands had a lot of natural gas. “We still had the idea that, by 2000, it would all be nuclear,” said Harm Jeeninga, director of business and programme development at the centre.
"In the 1990s, we found out about global warming so we focused on energy savings and tackling the greenhouse gas effect.”
The energy centre’s research focuses on biomass, energy efficiency, the environment, wind and solar, as well as energy engineering and socio-economic research.

Why are you, you?

Why are you, you?
From this question, a new beginning.
From this question, a new destiny.
For you are a world, and a meeting of worlds.
Our dream is to unite that which has been
separated by history.
To return the many to the one.
A great story unites us all,
beyond colour and creed and gender.
The lightning flash of art
And the music of the heart.
We reflect all cultures, all ways.
We are a twenty first century wonder.
Universal ideals, visions of art and truth.
Now is the turning point of cultures and hopes.
Come with questions, leave with visions.
We are the link between the past and the future.
Here, through art, new possibilities are born. And
new answers are given wings.

Why are you, you?
Because we are mirrors of each other.
Because together we create new worlds.
Together we are more powerful than we know.
We connect, we inspire, we multiply illuminations
with the unique light of art.

Pupils in Abu Dhabi are learning the importance of being active, eating well and leading a healthy lifestyle now and throughout adulthood, thanks to a newly launched programme 'Healthy Lifestyle'.

As part of the Healthy Lifestyle programme, specially trained coaches from City Football Schools, along with Healthpoint physicians have visited schools throughout Abu Dhabi to give fun and interactive lessons on working out regularly, making the right food choices, getting enough sleep and staying hydrated, just like their favourite footballers.

Organised by Manchester City FC and Healthpoint, Manchester City FC’s regional healthcare partner and part of Mubadala’s healthcare network, the ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ programme will visit 15 schools, meeting around 1,000 youngsters over the next five months.

Designed to give pupils all the information they need to improve their diet and fitness habits at home, at school and as they grow up, coaches from City Football Schools will work alongside teachers to lead the youngsters through a series of fun, creative and educational classes as well as activities, including playing football and other games.

Dr Mai Ahmed Al Jaber, head of public health at Healthpoint, said: “The programme has different aspects - diet, exercise, sleep and mental well-being. By having a focus on each of those and delivering information in a way that children can absorb easily it can help to address childhood obesity."
