Counting the cost

Drivers who believe that collisions only happen to bad drivers and not them are part of the reason why the risk of death and injury on our roads is so high. As we reported yesterday, road safety campaigners are using personal accounts of lost limbs, brain damage, collapsed lungs, paralysis and lives cut short in the UAE's 4,000-plus traffic accidents each year as a way to sheet home the message about the human cost caused by unsafe drivers.

Some dangerous drivers convince themselves they are invincible and that their skill somehow inoculates them from risk. But this self-confidence can often lead to dangerous driving when the hallmarks of safe driving is patience, planning ahead, caution, empathy and awareness of the actions of others.

It is up to all of us to make roads safer – including the supposed expert drivers – because every time a safety rule is flouted, drivers are not just gambling with their own lives but also their passengers’ and other road users.
