Cool summer reads

Summer is upon us and many of us are busy selecting our favourite television series to get us through the hot months. Instead of researching the latest offering on Netflix or choosing a new box set, why not reach for a good book? Is there a better time of the year to crack into that book that has been on your bedside table than during the long and lazy months of summer?

As part of the Year of Reading, The National has published summer reading recommendations in our weekend Review and today’s Arts&Life section, with more to come. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a non-fiction account of Palestinian life or the latest in American fiction – not to mention the vast array of classics that you never got around to reading – there is always a good book to immerse yourself in.

And, after all, you can’t take your television set to the beach with you.
