Concerns about Khloe Kardashian’s clothes

  • English
  • Arabic

I refer to Khloe Kardashian's Dubai niqab snap sparks debate (May 27), about an Instagram post showing the US reality-TV star in traditional UAE dress.

I can see why others would think she is using it for her own commercial purposes, but I can also see that she is honouring the culture.

At least she didn’t wear it in a disrespectful way, as Rihanna did when she was in Abu Dhabi.

Jen Bishop, Abu Dhabi

It’s not a bad thing to bring positive publicity to someone wearing the niqab.

So many people around the world have negative views about the niqab, so something positive should be welcome.

Samantha Attfield, Abu Dhabi

I struggle to see how people can be offended by this when anybody can go to Dubai Mall and pay to dress up in UAE national dress and have their photograph take.

If people were really offended by this, it would not be allowed.

Hannah Shirran, Dubai

There is no point giving Khloe Kardashian any more attention. There are more interesting people in the world.

A picture of suffering in Yemen

The story by Mohammed Al Qalisi, In wartime, gender norms in conservative Yemen disrupted (May 28) gives a very vivid account of the situation on the ground in Sanaa.

I was particularly impressed with the story of Ghofran Nori, who took responsibility for managing a petrol station for women when she found out that women were finding it difficult to get fuel for their cars.

Let us hope that this war in Yemen ends soon so that people can lead a normal daily life.

Hammour ban will help species

I share the concerns expressed from time to time about fishing practices in the UAE.

As someone who has worked on fisheries programmes in the Pacific, I have first-hand experience of the harm caused by overfishing.

I was therefore pleased to learn that a well-known Abu Dhabi restaurant has removed hammour, a species whose stocks are dwindling, from its menu. I hope that this example is followed by the many restaurants that continue to serve this fish.

The self-imposed ban is a responsible and effective move against the overfishing of some species in our waters.

Crossing laws aren’t enforced

I was shocked to read about the recent road deaths (Pedestrian was on bonnet for 3 blocks, Abu Dhabi traffic prosecutor reveals, May 27).

The problem is that too many drivers don’t understand how pedestrian crossings work. If you stop, every driver behind you will honk their horn and go crazy. So, nobody stops.

I think there should be a speed bump before every crossing. Traffic police should have a high presence at crossings and issue heavy fines until the message is clear.

Moreover, footage from existing traffic cameras could be used to identify and fine people who don’t stop at pedestrian crossings.

Nothing will change unless a major pedestrian-safety campaign is undertaken.

Talal A, Abu Dhabi

Many drivers are simply not concentrating; they are trying to do many things at once.

Sadly, I don’t think it will ever change. A few people may read the article and alter their behaviour, but on the whole drivers seem to be very selfish.

A Kirkman, Abu Dhabi

Pedestrians always have the right of way at a crossing. But many drivers just don’t stop.

Fitting tribute to a movie legend

Thank you to Rym Ghazal for her article, For Omar Sharif, love survives even in tough times (May 27), about the star's three-year struggle with Alheimer's.

I love Sharif’s work and I enjoyed his movies tremendously.

Tale of two cities’ hotel room rates

I am writing in reference to Dubai hotel room rates register biggest decline in over four years (May 28).

I’d rather stay in Abu Dhabi and drive up, because the prices are outrageous in Dubai.

You get better rooms for the price in Abu Dhabi.

The burning issue

The internal combustion engine is facing a watershed moment – major manufacturer Volvo is to stop producing petroleum-powered vehicles by 2021 and countries in Europe, including the UK, have vowed to ban their sale before 2040. The National takes a look at the story of one of the most successful technologies of the last 100 years and how it has impacted life in the UAE.
