Beautifying talks

On the surface, the invitation extended by Colombia’s Farc rebels to Miss Universe Paulina Vega seems like a PR manoeuvre. They invited the newly crowned beauty queen to assist their peace negotiations with the government to end a guerrilla war that has lasted 50 years. The 22-year-old business student from Colombia’s north didn’t respond immediately to the request, but her possible presence raises some stimulating questions. For two years, negotiators have tried – and failed – to broker an agreement to end the conflict that has killed more than 220,000. Might the inclusion of Miss Universe provide the necessary spark?

What is certain is that Miss Universe could hone her negotiating skills in her own sector – and in this region – by first brokering a peace deal between Miss Universe contestants. When Miss Israel photobombed Miss Lebanon two weeks ago, some very ugly comments were made. If the new Miss Universe can patch up that rift, peace in Colombia should be a cakewalk.
