Apps that could save lives

By making communication easier and more enjoyable, smartphone technology has changed the way we lead our lives. When it comes to two new apps being promoted by the Dubai Health Authority, it may even be life-saving. As The National reported, the apps will give patients access to a range of services, including test results and medical records.

Making this information portable has obvious advantages. Patients who move within the UAE or overseas may be able to use the technology to supply accurate information about their health history, vital signs and medications to their new general practitioner or hospital ER department. This could certainly make a big difference in an emergency. The danger is that personal information could fall into the wrong hands if the phone is lost or stolen. As long as this data can be kept secure yet still accessible – perhaps on a cloud server rather than on the phone – the technology could become indispensable.
