Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, paid tribute following the death of Sheikh Muhammad Ali Sultan Al Ulama on Monday.
In a post on X, Sheikh Mohammed described him as "one of Dubai's distinguished scholars".
Sheikh Mohammed highlighted his valuable contribution to Islamic studies and his efforts in helping "hundreds of students graduate".
"He wrote more than 70 books on Sharia science. He completed dozens of charitable projects. His council was full of goodness, Sharia knowledge, and engaged with the people," Sheikh Mohammed wrote.
"May God have mercy on him and grant his family and relatives patience and solace."
Born in 1920, he inherited the title Sultan Al Ulama, which means 'Sultan of scholars', from his late father.
In 2016, he was named the Dubai Quran Award's Islamic Personality of the Year at the age of 96.
He completed his education in India and Al Azhar in Cairo, and returned to the UAE to teach Arabic and Islamic Shariah at the Rahmaniya School that was founded by his late father, renowned scholar Imam Abdurrahman bin Yusuf.
He wrote more than 70 books, including a 11-part Quran explanation, and undertook more than 200 charity projects in his lifetime.
