Meet the man struggling to keep the lights on at Beirut's biggest hospital

Last year, Hassan Maaz had to run his backup generators at Rafic Hariri University Hospital for around 80 hours over the whole year. This year, he's hitting that number approximately every three days. Patients' lives are on the line.

A general view of Rafik Hariri University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, 10 September 2021 (issued 17 September 2021). Rafik Hariri University Hospital, like many other hospitals in Lebanon, is suffering from the effects of the deep economic crisis in the country. The Department of Haematology and Oncology at the clinic is particularly affected by the lack of drugs for cancer treatment. The shortage of palliative medicines and the increasing cost of treatments - when almost 80 percent of the Lebanese population is living in poverty, according to the UN - adds to the struggle of thousands of cancer patients in the country.
