With the year coming to a close, UAE residents can look forward to 2021 in truly dazzling style.

The UAE is already known for its extravagant and record-breaking New Year's Eve firework displays as last year Ras Al Khaimah broke two Guinness World records for the "Most Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for launching Fireworks Simultaneously" and "The Longest Firework Waterfall". Back in 2014, Dubai ushered in the New Year by breaking the Guinness record at the time for "Largest Firework Display", with a pyrotechnics extravaganza of almost 500,000 fireworks, mostly along the Palm Jumeirah and The World Islands.

This year, a number of prime attractions in the country are gearing up to send off the year in spectacular fashion. The Burj Khalifa has announced there will be fireworks on the world's tallest building, while Atlantis, The Palm is promising the "largest-ever pyro display".

Nakheel has confirmed there will not be fireworks this year at any of its mall destinations, which includes Club Vista Mare and The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah.

Here’s a look at some of the firework displays that have officially been confirmed.

The world’s tallest building will be celebrating New Year’s Eve with a “grand masterpiece of fireworks and lights and laser show”. While not too many details have been disclosed about the theme of the display, Mohamed Alabbar, founder of Emaar, the developer of the Burj Khalifa, has said the attraction will be delivering “an even bigger gala event” this year.

Downtown Dubai will be adorned with decorations, and the fireworks and laser and light show will be synchronised to The Dubai Fountain show for an impressive display.

To ensure public health and safety for all visitors, Emaar will be implementing several preventive measures, including thermal cameras, social distancing, contactless payments and frequent deep cleaning and disinfection, in line with Dubai Government guidelines and directives.

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
