Get ready to glow - Electric Run is coming to Dubai

Dig out that neon top – Electric Run is coming to the UAE. Launched in the United States in 2013, more than a million people in 30 cities have participated in what is the world’s “brightest” 5-kilometre run.

The November 6 event in Dubai, sponsored by Daman ActiveLife, is essentially “a disco party meets physical challenges”, with the track (the route is yet to be announced) marked out into courses such as Electro Rainforest, Rainbow Road, Sweet Tooth Acres, The Powerhouse, Electric Avenue, Pillar Party and Under the Sea.

Each section will be decorated with motifs and light installations, DJs will spin right through the run and participants will be treated to an end-of-race concert at the finish line. The event supports One, a not-for-profit organisation that creates awareness about and pushes political leaders to take a stand on poverty and disease in Sub-Saharan Africa.

David Sanderson, event director at Fast Track Middle East – organisers of the race – says Electric Run is a fun challenge for non-athletes too. “This event is an incredible fusion of light and sound. So whether you are a regular runner or want to tackle your first 5k, you will certainly appreciate the energy it will bring to Dubai.”

• Packs for registrants will include a T-shirt with a glowing logo, LED bracelet and UV glow body pen. Look for updates on www.electricrun.ae

Defence review at a glance

• Increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 but given “turbulent times it may be necessary to go faster”

• Prioritise a shift towards working with AI and autonomous systems

• Invest in the resilience of military space systems.

• Number of active reserves should be increased by 20%

• More F-35 fighter jets required in the next decade

• New “hybrid Navy” with AUKUS submarines and autonomous vessels

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?

The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.

A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.

Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.

The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.

When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.
