Is Japan a country for all seasons?

I am thinking of going to Japan on holiday. What's the best time to go? Japan is situated in north-east Asia and is made up of four main islands - Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku - while another 4,000 smaller islands lie off the coast. Unlike some other Asian countries, Japan experiences four distinct seasons. Spring is a popular time to visit as it is the time when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, while autumn is filled with the spectacular colours of changing leaves. Summers can be too humid for some, but if you want to try something different, why not visit Japan in the winter?

If you have already hit the slopes at Ski Dubai and are looking for the real thing, look no further. Adrenalin junkies worldwide head to Japan in search of the best powder, which with its mountainous terrain and freezing winter climate, usually delivers. Snow resorts at Niseko in Hokkaido and Hakuba in Nagano are two favourites, as well as Shiga Kogen in Nagano, which is one of the largest ski resort areas in the world.

To celebrate the winter season there is also the Sapporo Snow Festival, Japan's largest snow festival, which will run from Feb 5 to 11 in 2010. During that time, Odori Park, the grounds at Community Dome Tsudome, and the main street in Susukino will be filled with ice sculptures and snow statues for visitors and locals to marvel at. Prepare to be met by heavy crowds though, as this popular festival attracts an estimated two million people each year.

To keep warm, relax in one of Japan's 3,000 natural hot springs, also known as onsen. The hot springs are a big part of the Japanese culture and are said to be beneficial for your health, too. An old folk song from Kusatu claims the water is able to "cure everything but love sickness". Stay in a traditional Japanese inn, a ryokan, or visit one of the local bathhouses. The spa resorts in Beppu and Kusatsu Onsen are two of the countries most popular.

Don't forget to try the local cuisine. Taraba-gani, or snow crab, is in peak season midwinter, or try a delicious warming Japanese stew such as oden, which is filled with fish dumplings, fried tofu, eggs, and vegetables. Emirates flies from Dubai direct to Tokyo starting at US$1,692 (Dh6,215) return, including tax. To get to Nagano, take the high-speed Asama Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station. Day 2, Abu Dhabi Test: At a glance

Moment of the day Dinesh Chandimal has inherited a challenging job, after being made Sri Lanka’s Test captain. He responded in perfect fashion, with an easy-natured century against Pakistan. He brought up three figures with a majestic cover drive, which he just stood and admired.

Stat of the day – 33 It took 33 balls for Dilruwan Perera to get off the mark. His time on zero was eventful enough. The Sri Lankan No 7 was given out LBW twice, but managed to have both decisions overturned on review. The TV replays showed both times that he had inside edged the ball onto his pad.

The verdict In the two previous times these two sides have met in Abu Dhabi, the Tests have been drawn. The docile nature of proceedings so far makes that the likely outcome again this time, but both sides will be harbouring thoughts that they can force their way into a winning position.

Yemen's Bahais and the charges they often face

The Baha'i faith was made known in Yemen in the 19th century, first introduced by an Iranian man named Ali Muhammad Al Shirazi, considered the Herald of the Baha'i faith in 1844.

The Baha'i faith has had a growing number of followers in recent years despite persecution in Yemen and Iran.

Today, some 2,000 Baha'is reside in Yemen, according to Insaf.

"The 24 defendants represented by the House of Justice, which has intelligence outfits from the uS and the UK working to carry out an espionage scheme in Yemen under the guise of religion.. aimed to impant and found the Bahai sect on Yemeni soil by bringing foreign Bahais from abroad and homing them in Yemen," the charge sheet said.

Baha'Ullah, the founder of the Bahai faith, was exiled by the Ottoman Empire in 1868 from Iran to what is now Israel. Now, the Bahai faith's highest governing body, known as the Universal House of Justice, is based in the Israeli city of Haifa, which the Bahais turn towards during prayer.

The Houthis cite this as collective "evidence" of Bahai "links" to Israel - which the Houthis consider their enemy.

How I connect with my kids when working or travelling

Little notes: My girls often find a letter from me, with a joke, task or some instructions for the afternoon, and saying what I’m excited for when I get home.
Phone call check-in: My kids know that at 3.30pm I’ll be free for a quick chat.
Highs and lows: Instead of a “how was your day?”, at dinner or at bathtime we share three highlights; one thing that didn’t go so well; and something we’re looking forward to.
I start, you next: In the morning, I often start a little Lego project or drawing, and ask them to work on it while I’m gone, then we’ll finish it together.
Bedtime connection: Wake up and sleep time are important moments. A snuggle, some proud words, listening, a story. I can’t be there every night, but I can start the day with them.
Undivided attention: Putting the phone away when I get home often means sitting in the car to send a last email, but leaving it out of sight between home time and bedtime means you can connect properly.
Demystify, don’t demonise your job: Help them understand what you do, where and why. Show them your workplace if you can, then it’s not so abstract when you’re away - they’ll picture you there. Invite them into your “other” world so they know more about the different roles you have.
