Four new hotels in Switzerland

From the opening of the biggest five-star hotel development in years to affordable boutique hotels in Zurich, there's a lot going on in Switzerland

Burgenstock Resort opens on Lake Lucerne

The biggest five-star hotel development in Switzerland for several years has opened its doors on the shores of Lake Lucerne in the centre of the country. The new-build mountainside Burgenstock Hotel has 102 rooms and suites and several bars and restaurants. The project is part of a larger existing development, the Burgenstock Resort, comprising four hotels in total, with a tally of 383 rooms and suites, as well as 12 restaurants and bars, 67 residence suites, a 10,000sqm spa and a health and medical centre which has undergone a nine-year, US$569m (Dh2m) remodelling project. Rooms cost from Chf573 (Dh2,160) per night, including taxes.

Well-priced stays in Zurich

In the Helvetia Square area close to trendy Zurich West, about a 15-minute walk from the city centre, The Yard is a new boutique hotel and restaurant with an outdoor terrace. Guests get reduced entrance fees at the Volkshaus hammam and spa around the corner. Rooms cost from Chf180 (Dh678) per night including taxes.

Also on the western site of the city centre, but closer to the old town, is the Hotel Motel One Zurich, part of the Motel One chain which has hotels in the UK, Germany, Brussels, the Netherlands and Austria, and an existing property in Basel. The Zurich property is located next to the Old Botanical Garden and close to Lake Zurich. Rooms cost from Chf169 (Dh637) per night, including taxes (www.motel-one.com).

Design hotel in the Swiss Alps

In one of Europe's highest villages, 2,000m above sea level, the four-star Chandolin Boutique Hotel, a member of Design Hotels, is located in the village of Chandolin in the French-speaking Valais region. The area has year-round appeal with hiking, mountain biking and skiing trails. The hotel is built in traditional style on the outside, with slick interiors designed by Extreme Artdesign Studio; there is also a luxurious spa and high-end restaurant serving seasonal meals. There are a total of 25 rooms and four apartments. The closest airport is Geneva; rooms cost from €136 (Dh600) per night, including taxes (www.designhotels.com).
