Those seeking an adrenalin rush will soon have another option to get their blood pumping in the UAE.
A Bear Grylls Survival Academy is coming to Ras Al Khaimah next year, offering tourists and residents alike a chance to learn some of the British adventurer's top tips and techniques.
The academy, which will be located on the Jebel Jais mountain, will offer a selection of courses suitable for all ages and fitness levels when it opens in the first quarter of 2020.
The RAK academy will join 20 other locations around the world offering courses, and will feature half-day, 24 and 48-hour options, designed to test participants' abilities to thrive and survive under extreme conditions.
While TV star Grylls won't be hosting the courses himself, the academy will be run by trained instructors who will put amateur adventurers through their paces.
Whether attending as a family, a work team or an individual, attendees will be taught survival techniques that will help them traverse tough terrain, such as rock climbing.
Every course will end with a wilderness expedition where outdoor enthusiasts can test their newfound skills, such as making a fire, building a shelter and navigation.
“As the UAE’s highest mountain with its breathtaking views and adrenalin-packed activities, Jebel Jais is the perfect choice of destination to expand our presence in the region," said Paul Gardiner, managing director of Bear Grylls Survival Academy.
The academy is the latest adventure-tourism offering to launch in the emirate, which is already home to the world’s longest zip line, which can also be found on the peak of Jebel Jais.

There are direct flights from Dubai to Sofia with FlyDubai (www.flydubai.com) and Wizz Air (www.wizzair.com), from Dh1,164 and Dh822 return including taxes, respectively.
The trip
Plovdiv is 150km from Sofia, with an hourly bus service taking around 2 hours and costing $16 (Dh58). The Rhodopes can be reached from Sofia in between 2-4hours.
The trip was organised by Bulguides (www.bulguides.com), which organises guided trips throughout Bulgaria. Guiding, accommodation, food and transfers from Plovdiv to the mountains and back costs around 170 USD for a four-day, three-night trip.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
