Many of us visit cultural institutions when we travel, whether they be focused on history, art, fashion and everything in between. This season there is a selection of new sites set to open their doors globally. We have put together a list of four that are worth adding to your itinerary.
YSL Museum Marrakech
Opening on Monday, this museum is devoted to the work of the wondrously talented Yves Saint Laurent. Located on Rue Yves Saint Laurent, the museum is set on 4,000 square metres and features a 400-square-metre permanent exhibition space, an area for temporary exhibitions, a 130-seat auditorium, boutique, bookshop and cafe restaurant. The late fashion designer was a regular visitor to Marrakech, where he had a home, and the opening of the museum dedicated to him will coincide with the inauguration of a similar venue in the fashion capital, Paris. Yayoi Kusama Museum, Japan
Tokyo's newest art space opened at the beginning of the month and is sure to be the talk of the Instagram world thanks to its polka-dot exterior. The artist's signature pattern has been added to the curved windows of the five-storey museum. The polka-dots don't stop at the door, they are also in the elevators and the first exhibition is Creation is a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art. Exhibitions will be rotated every six months, and tickets to visit the exhibition have already sold out beyond November, so plan ahead, yayoikusamamuseum.jp
Institute of Contemporary Arts, Los Angeles
Founded in 1984 as the Santa Monica Museum of Art (SMMoA) and now the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Downtown LA builds on a history that has heavily involved connecting the community with art. The sizeable new space that opened last month hosts exhibitions by international artists as well as public programmes and, in 2018, will house a cafe. Admission is free and details on exhibitions can be found at www.theicala.org
Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island
We might be biased but this is one of the most anticipated openings of the year. With an opening date of November 11, the museum is a collaboration between France and Abu Dhabi that has been a number of years in the making. It will display art, manuscripts and objects of historical and cultural significance. Designed by award-winning architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel, the Louvre is sure to bring art lovers to the capital from right around the world. For the latest news go to www.louvreabudhabi.ae
