A UAE fisherman has made quite the splash at The Biggest Catch, the Waterfront Market’s annual festival celebrating the Emirates' fishing industry.
The event was celebrated on Monday, with fishermen participating in a contest to weigh the fishes they caught. The winner was then honoured with a Waterfront Market trophy while commemorative plaques and medals were given to runners up and the rest of the participants.
This year, the trophy went to Mohammad Saif Al Suwaidi for a fish that weighed roughly 25 kilograms, with a length of about 1.2 metres.
Others who were presented with commemorative plaques include Mohammad Ali Al Marzooqi, Khalifa Said Al Suwaidi, Khalid Al Nuaimi, Mohammad Ibrahim Al Muhairi, Mohammad Abdulla Al Marzooqi and Faraj Al Marri.
The Waterfront Market in Deira launched The Biggest Catch as a yearly celebration of the country's fishing community and culture.
"(It) is a humbling day of celebrations which honours the UAE's roots and educates new generations of what was once the country's main trade and source of wealth," says Mohammad Al Madani, manager of Waterfront Market. "We wholeheartedly thank the fishing community for their continuous hard work and contribution to our society."
Besides the weighing process, the festival included plenty of activities, carnival games and a celebratory barbecue for families. There were also competitions held, such as one that asked participants to guess the weight of the fish caught for a chance to win a prize.
