As expected, the attendees to Sunday night's Golden Globes awards ceremony almost exclusively wore black (apart from a few notable exceptions. Yes, we are looking at you Blanca Blanco), with many striking an understated tone, opting for strapless, column gowns.
Leading the way was Dove Cameron, looking exquisite in black velvet Monique Lhuillier dress with a simple bow at the waist. Katherine Langford was demure in floor-length Prada, lifted by a scattering of crystals around the waistline.
Dakota Johnson looked elegant in black velvet, accented with a single silver buckle and gossamer train. Alicia Vikander once again proved her inherent style in Louis Vuitton, the sombre black lace dress perfectly capturing the tone of the evening.
Jessica Biel looked elegant in black and nude Dior Haute Couture, while Angelina Jolie hit exactly the right tone with Atelier Versace, with shoulders draped in sheer chiffon edged with ostrich feathers, showing the world that it is the movie-star glamour of leading actresses that contributes so much to box-office revenue.
Isabelle Huppert – a regular on best-dressed lists – looked immaculate in a dress that covered from neck to wrist, shimmering with just the right amount of sequins. Margot Robbie went for a simply tailored but lavishly embroidered plunging gown by Gucci. Shailene Woodley looked striking in a turtleneck black and silver Ralph Lauren gown, while Diane Kruger was every inch the star in a silver-trimmed Prada tulle gown, complete with trailing layers.
Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot mixed the gown and suiting in a look from Tom Ford's spring/summer 2018, which teamed a ruched fitted dress with a cropped tuxedo blazer.
Fittingly, several actresses chose to take to the red carpet in trousers, eschewing the more traditional gown, perhaps taking their cue from Jane Fonda, who famously accepted her 1972 Oscar wearing trousers in protest of the Vietnam War. Susan Kelechi Watson wore an embroidered jumpsuit, Debra Messing opted for a floor-length, cut-away tunic, paired with trousers by Christian Siriano, and Alexis Bledel had a white and black jumpsuit with graphic leaves coiling around the torso.
Alison Brie put everyone to shame in a 1950s-style huge skirt over trousers look, which was as classy as it was effortless. Maggie Gyllenhaal had a dress over trousers, and Kyra Sedgwick also opted fro a tuxedo suit. The best look? Undoubtedly, that accolade goes to Claire Foy, in a black tuxedo by Stella McCartney, teamed with pulled-back hair and a red lip. Stark, bold and defiant, at an event that managed to draw attention to women’s equality, Foy looked breathtaking.
