Made to Measure: Let's get physical with stylish gym essentials

Dressing up for the gym shouldn't be all blood, sweat and tears.

There's a strict "anti-fashion on the fitness floor" rule, but there's no excuse for holes, sweat stains or moth-eaten shirts.

These five simplified sportswear items go the sartorial distance – high performance without aesthetic compromise.

The sweater

There's nothing like a swathe of cosy cotton to comfort a gruelling run. Layer over a shirt to insulate the body, while its fabrics keep things ventilated. Gant Rugger's cotton hoodie is laid-back but still athletic.

The shirt

We understand the need to show off the guns, but kindly stay away from sleeveless and tank tops. While Nike's Dri-FIT line is always reliable, reach for an airy cotton shirt in a neutral shade, like this one from Maison Martin Margiela.

The shoes

These well-cushioned, ultra-bendable New Balance 576 leather trainers are fit for cardio. Durable, dependable, and isn't the leather handsome?

The bag

I've seen grown-ups haul their clothes in Lulu plastic bags. Carry instead this tough leather holdall duffel from Marc by Marc Jacobs.

The shorts

Wear a pair loose enough to execute squats. Take it easy on the length, which should be cut like a lacrosse player's – just above the knee. These slim-cut stretch cotton shorts from the Swedish firm Acne are lightweight and easy to dry.
