He may have played the all-seeing Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but few saw Idris Elba's wedding coming this weekend.

The actor wed his long-term girlfriend, Sabrina Dhowre, in Morocco on Friday, in a ceremony that took many of his fans by surprise.

The Luther star, who had not publicly confirmed the date or location of the nuptials, married the model in Marrakesh, with many of the couple's friends and family members in attendance.

The newlyweds exchanged vows at the luxurious Ksar Char-Bagh hotel, according to British Vogue, which had exclusive access on the day.

Dhowre, 29, a former Miss Vancouver, wore a custom bridal gown by Vera Wang, the publication added, while Elba, 46, wore a bespoke suit by Ozwald Boateng.

The couple are feteing their marriage in a three-day celebration, with guests including famous faces such as Diana Ross.

Elba and Dhowre became engaged last February, after the Thor actor proposed on-stage during a screening of his film Yardie at a cinema in London. The couple are believed to have been dating since early 2017, after meeting on the set of The Mountain Between Us, which was filmed in Canada.

“Falling in love while making a movie about falling in love is pretty special,” Dhowre told People in 2017.

This is the third marriage for Elba, who was wed to make-up artist Hanne Norgaard from 1999 to 2003, and lawyer Sonya Hamlin in 2006.
