Here are 5 of Abu Dhabi’s must-try restaurant brands

  • English
  • Arabic

Abu Dhabi, being the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, is no stranger to incredible cuisine. The emirate offers a wide range of amazing restaurants, with intriguing backgrounds and cuisines to be discovered - and what easier way to explore local popular brands than by simply ordering online from the comfort of your own home or office.

Based on insights from talabat, the leading online food app in the region, it seems foodies are on the rise in Abu Dhabi, with the overall amount of orders per month growing by 122% in 2020 compared to 2019. Particularly, healthy food continues to grow in popularity. According to talabat’s insights, the most in demand cuisines in Abu Dhabi are burgers, followed by Arabic and Pizza, with the 4th spot recently taken by healthy cuisine.

Have you ever found yourself wondering about how some of these loved Abu Dhabi restaurants came into being? talabat’s restaurant partners shared with us their inspiration to enter the F&B sphere, sharing their origin stories on how their journey kicked off.

What pulled you towards opening your own restaurant? What is your story?

Rain Café -

"The Rain Café was born out of a love of rains and storms - the Emirati owner was a Hurricane chaser (a person who is very interested in rainstorms and chases after them to observe) who opened the doors of the Rain Café to bring together two of his favorite things: coffee and wet weather." says Shourouk Abuamara, Delivery Manager.

The Rain Café aims to provide customers with a special experience, something you can feel as soon as you walk in through the doors of the rain designed space.

Abuamara adds: "We chose to deliver through talabat so that we can help customers enjoy our signature coffees and pastries any time, anywhere. Our Acai Bowl and Ice Spanish Latte are always in popular demand!"

West to West -

Laddi Knights, the owner of West to West, tells us: "Our story began in 2014, when I came to Abu Dhabi to teach! Quickly realising that I missed the food I grew up eating (I'm British, my Mother is from Sierra Leone and my Father is from Trinidad and Tobago), I saw an opportunity to reconnect with the food I loved and decided to introduce the community to it as well."

"In 2019, my wife Michele and I opened a West African and Carribean inspired restaurant in Abu Dhabi after previously setting up a pop-up stall in Yas Mall, where we served food inspired by dishes we missed from our parents, aunts, uncles and friends - basically everyone whose food we missed," Laddi adds.

Laddi mentions that he chose to expand his operations through food delivery, partnering with talabat to increase his restaurant's exposure to a wider audience - giving others a taste of his favourite childhood dishes. Visiting West to West gives you a taste of what it would be like in Laddi's family home: you will be welcomed with smiles, laughter, good music and, of course, good food! Their must try dishes are: Jamaican Jerk Chicken Set Meal and the Carnival Curry Goat Set Meal.

Ramlat Zakher -

Ramlat Zakher started as a small house kitchen back in 2010 when Saleh Al Ameri's Mother initially had the idea of serving her amazing Emirati home cooking to the community after receiving great feedback from her neighbours, whom she would often welcome with food.

Al Ameri, the owner of Ramlat Zakher tells us, "I could see that my Mother had a real passion for cooking and serving up amazing experiences to others - so I decided to turn that vision into a real business, giving customers a flashback of the good old food they used to eat when they were younger. They always tell us that our dishes take them right down memory lane and we now operate all over the UAE, feeding the whole country our delicious food!"

Ramlat Zakher chose to take the step to reach out to a wider audience, partnering with talabat to deliver their home food cravings. They now spend their time fulfilling a larger number of orders that they receive from new customers daily, making hearts and stomachs fill with love all over the city. We recommend you try their delectable Mahala Zayed and Harees, traditional home dishes that are sure to make you want more.

1 Million Café -

To satisfy their immense love of coffee, Hamdan Al Seiari and his brothers would spend ages experimenting with different flavors and beans from a wide range of countries around the world. Years later, they turned their successful experiments into a specialty coffee café known as the 1 Million Café to bring their love of coffee to life and share it with others in the community.

"We initially began our home business in 2014 and used Instagram to promote our brand." says Al Seiari, the owner of 1 Million Café. "My brother would take the initiative to travel to different countries and try all the various flavors of coffee for inspiration, which led to us creating this Emirati concept that revolves around what we love most - coffee!"

Notable salonnières of the Middle East through history

Al Khasan (Okaz, Saudi Arabia)

Tamadir bint Amr Al Harith, known simply as Al Khasan, was a poet from Najd famed for elegies, earning great renown for the eulogy of her brothers Mu’awiyah and Sakhr, both killed in tribal wars. Although not a salonnière, this prestigious 7th century poet fostered a culture of literary criticism and could be found standing in the souq of Okaz and reciting her poetry, publicly pronouncing her views and inviting others to join in the debate on scholarship. She later converted to Islam.

Maryana Marrash (Aleppo)

A poet and writer, Marrash helped revive the tradition of the salon and was an active part of the Nadha movement, or Arab Renaissance. Born to an established family in Aleppo in Ottoman Syria in 1848, Marrash was educated at missionary schools in Aleppo and Beirut at a time when many women did not receive an education. After touring Europe, she began to host salons where writers played chess and cards, competed in the art of poetry, and discussed literature and politics. An accomplished singer and canon player, music and dancing were a part of these evenings.

Princess Nazil Fadil (Cairo)

Princess Nazil Fadil gathered religious, literary and political elite together at her Cairo palace, although she stopped short of inviting women. The princess, a niece of Khedive Ismail, believed that Egypt’s situation could only be solved through education and she donated her own property to help fund the first modern Egyptian University in Cairo.

Mayy Ziyadah (Cairo)

Ziyadah was the first to entertain both men and women at her Cairo salon, founded in 1913. The writer, poet, public speaker and critic, her writing explored language, religious identity, language, nationalism and hierarchy. Born in Nazareth, Palestine, to a Lebanese father and Palestinian mother, her salon was open to different social classes and earned comparisons with souq of where Al Khansa herself once recited.

Your rights as an employee

The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.

The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.

If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.

Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.

The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.

Day 3, Abu Dhabi Test: At a glance

Moment of the day Just three balls remained in an exhausting day for Sri Lanka’s bowlers when they were afforded some belated cheer. Nuwan Pradeep, unrewarded in 15 overs to that point, let slip a seemingly innocuous delivery down the legside. Babar Azam feathered it behind, and Niroshan Dickwella dived to make a fine catch.

Stat of the day - 2.56 Shan Masood and Sami Aslam are the 16th opening partnership Pakistan have had in Tests in the past five years. That turnover at the top of the order – a new pair every 2.56 Test matches on average – is by far the fastest rate among the leading Test sides. Masood and Aslam put on 114 in their first alliance in Abu Dhabi.

The verdict Even by the normal standards of Test cricket in the UAE, this has been slow going. Pakistan’s run-rate of 2.38 per over is the lowest they have managed in a Test match in this country. With just 14 wickets having fallen in three days so far, it is difficult to see 26 dropping to bring about a result over the next two.

Day 1, Abu Dhabi Test: At a glance

Moment of the day Dimuth Karunaratne had batted with plenty of pluck, and no little skill, in getting to within seven runs of a first-day century. Then, while he ran what he thought was a comfortable single to mid-on, his batting partner Dinesh Chandimal opted to stay at home. The opener was run out by the length of the pitch.

Stat of the day - 1 One six was hit on Day 1. The boundary was only breached 18 times in total over the course of the 90 overs. When it did arrive, the lone six was a thing of beauty, as Niroshan Dickwella effortlessly clipped Mohammed Amir over the square-leg boundary.

The verdict Three wickets down at lunch, on a featherbed wicket having won the toss, and Sri Lanka’s fragile confidence must have been waning. Then Karunaratne and Chandimal's alliance of precisely 100 gave them a foothold in the match. Dickwella’s free-spirited strokeplay meant the Sri Lankans were handily placed at 227 for four at the close.
