Toward more conscious dining

As far as body trends go, portliness is passé and being overweight is most definitely out of date.

As Denmark introduces what's understood to be the world's first fat tax, it seems that being healthy and trim is back in.

All foods that are high in saturated fat, including dairy products, meat, oil and processed foods, are now subject to a levy, in the hope that Danes will curb their intake of fatty foods. And in the name of responsible eating, one can only wonder if the law will eventually be extended to include refined carbohydrates, sugar and salt.

In a similar vein, Saudi restaurant owner Fahad Al Anezi is taking the maxim "waste not want not" to the limit. Over-order at his establishment, Marmar, at your peril - for you'll be fined for not clearing your plate. Determined to put an end to customers' habits of ordering huge quantities of food solely to "impress the people around them and boost their social prestige", Al Anezi is taking drastic measures.

His serving staff now total up how much food has been left at the end of a meal and put the difference on the bill. He says that so far the reaction has been positive and says it just goes to prove that many diners have "egos bigger than their stomachs".
