The breakfasting culture in the UAE is one we take seriously. From early-start brunches and office deliveries to regular restaurants, the Emirates offers a host of good brekkie fodder. We asked some UAE residents to tell us what their favourite breakfast dishes are and where they eat them.
Lotus Pancakes, Fume, Dubai Marina
As far as sweet treats for breakfast go, this dish is actually found in the dessert menu, so the calibre of sweet-tooth required is clear from the outset. Lotus was an overused buzzword in the UAE for a while there, but Fume seems to have waited for it to reach a low ebb again, and the perfect opportunity to create pancakes with a difference. These giant fluffy, "lotus"-flavoured cake-like spheres are piled high on the plate, slathered with a caramel, lotus sauce and topped with caramelised bananas and Chantilly cream - which for once, doesn't taste like foamy plastic. Think Grandma's special pancakes, topped with dessert, almost requiring a weightlifter to hoist to your table, with a flavour akin to malt biscuits - which is a very, very good thing.
Oriental Breakfast, 3rd Place Cafe, Khalidiya, Abu Dhabi
I always order the Arabic breakfast. It's a mini-feast comprising the crispiest falafel ever, creamy labneh and grilled halloumi - among other yummy delights. Wash it down with some tart fresh orange juice and strong fresh coffee and you are good to go.
Common Grounds’, Barsha 1, Dubai
The smashed avocado is served with ricotta on a soy and linseed toast with a little salt, a sprig of coriander and a few chilli flakes to wake up you and your tastebuds. Add a couple of poached eggs, cooked your way, to make the perfect breakfast. Pair with some of CG’s awesome coffee (black, natch).
Hot Chocolate Marshmallow or Burrito Scrambled Egg, Cocoa Room, Dubai
Cocoa room is one of my fabulous go-to places if I have to impress some of my friends or family. Their Hot Chocolate Marshmallow is something I would recommend everyone try, pretty sure you will be skipping your lunch after breakfast here. Another scrumptious dish to order here would be the cheesy Burrito Scrambled Egg. It’s pretty hard to resist
Braised Short Rib hash, Mo's at CityWalk, Dubai
It's beautiful, slightly salty pulled beef, with runny eggs and some little potato cubes and hollandaise. And you kind of mix it all in together and it's slightly wet and gooey and just delicious.
McGettigan's full Irish Breakfast, McGettigans, World Trade Center, Dubai
My favourite breakfast is the full Irish. It's a mighty feed that will keep you going for the rest of the day. Sausages, bacon, fried eggs, black pudding, white pudding, baked beans, hash browns, mushrooms, grilled tomato and toast, with tea or coffee.
Eggs Royale, Leopald's of London, Reem Island, Abu Dhabi
Eggs Royale is a very traditional, classic breakfast dish. It's poached eggs on English muffins topped with smoked salmon and drizzled with hollandaise sauce. Leopold's has lovely food of at a reasonable price and the service is good as well.
