New openings: 3BK and Meshicho
Armani Hotel is home to a new 250-seat restaurant, 3BK, which takes its name from the fact that it’s located on the third-floor terrace space within the Burj Khalifa. Colombian chef Juan Esteban Torregrosa promises a menu that changes with the season. On offer at the moment are dishes with a Latin American and Asian slant, including a trio of corn and cheeses, seaweed-cured scallops with yoghurt roast garlic gel, Wagyu maki rolls with foie gras, asparagus and truffle, exotic platters of sushi, and miso milk cake with yoghurt ice cream, black sesame foam and yuzu pearls.
The venue is in keeping with the Armani brand; think gold accents, leather upholstery, marble and onyx countertops and floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the Dubai Fountain. To book a table or for more information, call 04 888 6333.
If it’s a Mexican ceviche that gets your taste buds tingling, head to Meshico at The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah. The cantina serves dishes popular in the central regions of Mexico – including duck carnitas, chipotle meatballs, beef stew, chilli-rubbed octopus and red rice.
The vibrant space is done up in stonework, copper and lashings of fuchsia, and adorned with glass pinata chandeliers and hundreds of hanging hummingbird alebrijes figurines across its two floors. The eatery also has a raw bar, a lounge-style terrace and the region’s largest agave menu. Call 04 514 4512 to book a table.
New branch: Morozoff at The Dubai Mall
In 1931, Fedor Dmitrievich Morozoff – a refugee of the Russian Revolution – opened a little chocolate store in Kobe. In 1932, Morozoff became the first store in Japan to release a Valentine’s Day chocolate, establishing itself as the go-to for sweet treats. In 1969, the confectioner began selling lemon cheesecake, made from cream cheese sourced from Hokkaido. Fifty years later, the Hokkaido cheesecake is still a best-seller at Morozoff’s 1,200-plus outlets in Japan, as well as being available in its latest outpost in The Dubai Mall. Other goodies you can sample here, as well as at the Wafi branch, include almond, cashew and chocolate chip cookies from the Arcadia line, Feuillage, a wafer-thin baked cookie, chocolate mousse and Deka pudding. New menu: Bombay Brasserie at Taj Dubai
The fine-dining brand (which originated in London in the 1980s) is big on classic dishes from North India: think chicken tikka masala and lamb chops with mint chutney. However, the eight or so additions to the menu are more in keeping with the fusion fare that seems to have overtaken Indian food in the UAE (think Farzi Cafe meets Tresind). On offer are: deconstructed samosa chaat; wild rice tuna salad with a coriander and cumin crust; kale and smoked cheese kebab with pear chutney; rib-eye steak in roganjosh-style grey with clove smoke; and chicken biryani stuffed into a raw bamboo log. New chef’s table: The Pass at Zabeel House Al Seef
The year-old hotel has launched The Pass, a monthly chef's table restricted to five people. Continuing with the quintet theme, the paired meal dinner will include five courses for Dh555, with a new menu every month, including a vegan option upon request. Heading the table is chef John Buenaventura of Cuisinero Uno fame.
