It’s the most talked-about invite of the season, with the guest list so exclusive that plus-ones are almost unheard of. It’s none other than Chanel’s cruise collection 2014/15 presentation, which will be held from 6pm onwards on Tuesday, May 13.
Few details about the show and its after-party have been revealed – Chanel is trying to keep it all a surprise – save for the fact that it will take place on The Island, a new private isle off the coast of Dubai, and that the maison’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld will be hosting.
For the past 13 years, Chanel has toured its cruise (pre-spring/summer) collection around the world – from Paris to New York and Singapore – but this marks the first time the label will show in the UAE.
The venue has been described by the French house as a “megalopolis of the 21st century”, which could hint at a futuristic theme. Yet, in the same breath, Chanel says Dubai is “a crossroads of civilisation between Europe and Asia”, implying there could be a fusion of traditional Arabian silhouettes with Riviera-inspired resort pieces.
One can only speculate. However, the burning question of whether Lagerfeld’s beloved, well-traveled Siamese cat Choupette will be coming with him has now been answered. @ChoupettesDiary confirmed the news to her 36,800 Twitter followers: “Packing my bags for Dubai! #Jetset #Chanel”.
A brief sojourn this May is unlikely to be Choupette and Herr Lagerfeld’s last trip to Dubai. Independently from Chanel, the designer has announced the development of 10 Karl Lagerfeld boutiques across the UAE and 15 in-store spaces by 2018, in a deal with the Dubai-based Chalhoub Group.
So, with Lagerfeld continuing to ride the crest of a fashionable wave, we thought it fitting to forecast what his stylish guests might be wearing to his soirée. Judging by Chanel’s previous private parties in the UAE, quilted bags, pearls and little black jackets will be out in force. • Attendees at Chanel’s Dubai show may want to refer to the style guide laid down by the many celebrities who wore the label at last week’s Met Gala – from Kristen Stewart to Chloë Moretz. Our favourites were Vogue’s editor Anna Wintour (wearing Chanel couture) and the singer Lily Allen (in a Chanel autumn 2012 couture gown and Chanel haute joaillerie).
• While Chanel’s fine jewellery might be just beyond the reach of many guests invited on Tuesday, chances are they may be sporting one of the label’s watches. Check out this dress watch from the brand’s latest launch, the Montre Premiere Triple Row, priced at Dh19,800.
• Lace for Gabrielle Chanel was deemed to be “one of the prettiest imitations ever made of natural fantasies”. Common OCD symptoms and how they manifest
Checking: the obsession or thoughts focus on some harm coming from things not being as they should, which usually centre around the theme of safety. For example, the obsession is “the building will burn down”, therefore the compulsion is checking that the oven is switched off.
Contamination: the obsession is focused on the presence of germs, dirt or harmful bacteria and how this will impact the person and/or their loved ones. For example, the obsession is “the floor is dirty; me and my family will get sick and die”, the compulsion is repetitive cleaning.
Orderliness: the obsession is a fear of sitting with uncomfortable feelings, or to prevent harm coming to oneself or others. Objectively there appears to be no logical link between the obsession and compulsion. For example,” I won’t feel right if the jars aren’t lined up” or “harm will come to my family if I don’t line up all the jars”, so the compulsion is therefore lining up the jars.
Intrusive thoughts: the intrusive thought is usually highly distressing and repetitive. Common examples may include thoughts of perpetrating violence towards others, harming others, or questions over one’s character or deeds, usually in conflict with the person’s true values. An example would be: “I think I might hurt my family”, which in turn leads to the compulsion of avoiding social gatherings.
Hoarding: the intrusive thought is the overvaluing of objects or possessions, while the compulsion is stashing or hoarding these items and refusing to let them go. For example, “this newspaper may come in useful one day”, therefore, the compulsion is hoarding newspapers instead of discarding them the next day.

Stuck in a job without a pay rise? Here's what to do
Chris Greaves, the managing director of Hays Gulf Region, says those without a pay rise for an extended period must start asking questions – both of themselves and their employer.
“First, are they happy with that or do they want more?” he says. “Job-seeking is a time-consuming, frustrating and long-winded affair so are they prepared to put themselves through that rigmarole? Before they consider that, they must ask their employer what is happening.”
Most employees bring up pay rise queries at their annual performance appraisal and find out what the company has in store for them from a career perspective.
Those with no formal appraisal system, Mr Greaves says, should ask HR or their line manager for an assessment.
“You want to find out how they value your contribution and where your job could go,” he says. “You’ve got to be brave enough to ask some questions and if you don’t like the answers then you have to develop a strategy or change jobs if you are prepared to go through the job-seeking process.”
For those that do reach the salary negotiation with their current employer, Mr Greaves says there is no point in asking for less than 5 per cent.
“However, this can only really have any chance of success if you can identify where you add value to the business (preferably you can put a monetary value on it), or you can point to a sustained contribution above the call of duty or to other achievements you think your employer will value.”
