A Leap of Faith in the dark
The bravest among us have taken the Leap of Faith at Atlantis's Aquaventure, that 27.5-metre vertical drop down a clear tunnel that plunges you through the shark lagoon (that's a free fall of nine storeys in a few seconds). But we got the chance to do it for our first time with a bang: just before midnight, with fireworks going off in the skies above the beach, just the distraction you need while you start questioning your sanity in the queue. Normally Aquaventure closes at sunset, but for the rest of the summer it's open at a reduced rate every Thursday evening from 8pm until midnight, including special entertainment such as the fireworks. WHAT I TRIED: Billing itself as the "region's first professional online retailer", www.aido.com is offering more than 3,000 movies and TV box sets delivered anywhere in the UAE for free within 48 hours. It boasts a diverse selection, including Bollywood and Arabic films, and plans soon to add music, books and games.
WHAT I HOPED FOR: I buy all my movies online, but I was hoping to find some television box sets that are hard to come by in the UAE. I was also hoping for quick and easy delivery, not always forthcoming in Abu Dhabi, in time for a weekend of eye-glazing enjoyment.
WHAT I EXPERIENCED: The website is a cinch to use, dividing movies up by genre and featuring picks of the week along with new releases. The only hitch was that it asked for a postcode, and it wouldn't accept "000000". I called the help line and got a helpful human being in Jebel Ali, who advised me to use my PO Box number. Bingo. Prices are in US dollars, billed to your credit card, but I was told they will be in dirhams soon. I ordered one afternoon, and the helpful human being called me up the next day around midday to say the order had been delivered by Aramex to the office at 8.30am. (They didn't know I was ordering as a test drive.)
THE FINAL VERDICT: I had two box sets - Entourage and 30 Rock - in my hands 24 hours after ordering, with absolutely no delivery hassle. Astonishing.

Terror attacks in Paris, November 13, 2015
- At 9.16pm, three suicide attackers killed one person outside the Atade de France during a foootball match between France and Germany
- At 9.25pm, three attackers opened fire on restaurants and cafes over 20 minutes, killing 39 people
- Shortly after 9.40pm, three other attackers launched a three-hour raid on the Bataclan, in which 1,500 people had gathered to watch a rock concert. In total, 90 people were killed
- Salah Abdeslam, the only survivor of the terrorists, did not directly participate in the attacks, thought to be due to a technical glitch in his suicide vest
- He fled to Belgium and was involved in attacks on Brussels in March 2016. He is serving a life sentence in France
Country-size land deals
US interest in purchasing territory is not as outlandish as it sounds. Here's a look at some big land transactions between nations:
Louisiana Purchase
If Donald Trump is one who aims to broker "a deal of the century", then this was the "deal of the 19th Century". In 1803, the US nearly doubled in size when it bought 2,140,000 square kilometres from France for $15 million.
Florida Purchase Treaty
The US courted Spain for Florida for years. Spain eventually realised its burden in holding on to the territory and in 1819 effectively ceded it to America in a wider border treaty.
Alaska purchase
America's spending spree continued in 1867 when it acquired 1,518,800 km2 of Alaskan land from Russia for $7.2m. Critics panned the government for buying "useless land".
The Philippines
At the end of the Spanish-American War, a provision in the 1898 Treaty of Paris saw Spain surrender the Philippines for a payment of $20 million.
US Virgin Islands
It's not like a US president has never reached a deal with Denmark before. In 1917 the US purchased the Danish West Indies for $25m and renamed them the US Virgin Islands.
Gwadar
The most recent sovereign land purchase was in 1958 when Pakistan bought the southwestern port of Gwadar from Oman for 5.5bn Pakistan rupees.

Daniella Weiss and Nachala
Described as 'the grandmother of the settler movement', she has encouraged the expansion of settlements for decades. The 79 year old leads radical settler movement Nachala, whose aim is for Israel to annex Gaza and the occupied West Bank, where it helps settlers built outposts.
Harel Libi & Libi Construction and Infrastructure
Libi has been involved in threatening and perpetuating acts of aggression and violence against Palestinians. His firm has provided logistical and financial support for the establishment of illegal outposts.
Zohar Sabah
Runs a settler outpost named Zohar’s Farm and has previously faced charges of violence against Palestinians. He was indicted by Israel’s State Attorney’s Office in September for allegedly participating in a violent attack against Palestinians and activists in the West Bank village of Muarrajat.
Coco’s Farm and Neria’s Farm
These are illegal outposts in the West Bank, which are at the vanguard of the settler movement. According to the UK, they are associated with people who have been involved in enabling, inciting, promoting or providing support for activities that amount to “serious abuse”.

Key findings
- Over a period of seven years, a team of scientists analysed dietary data from 50,000 North American adults.
- Eating one or two meals a day was associated with a relative decrease in BMI, compared with three meals. Snacks count as a meal. Likewise, participants who ate more than three meals a day experienced an increase in BMI: the more meals a day, the greater the increase.
- People who ate breakfast experienced a relative decrease in their BMI compared with “breakfast-skippers”.
- Those who turned the eating day on its head to make breakfast the biggest meal of the day, did even better.
- But scrapping dinner altogether gave the best results. The study found that the BMI of subjects who had a long overnight fast (of 18 hours or more) decreased when compared even with those who had a medium overnight fast, of between 12 and 17 hours.

What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. For example, a “small company” in the services industry has six to 50 employees with a turnover of more than Dh2 million up to Dh20m, while in the manufacturing industry the requirements are 10 to 100 employees with a turnover of more than Dh3m up to Dh50m, according to Dubai SME, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.
A “medium-sized company” can either have staff of 51 to 200 employees or 101 to 250 employees, and a turnover less than or equal to Dh200m or Dh250m, again depending on whether the business is in the trading, manufacturing or services sectors.
