Labour law must be enforced

  • English
  • Arabic

I am happy to learn about the changes in the labour law that makes the hiring process more transparent (UAE's new labour rules will ensure employees are treated well, say businesses, January 12).

These workers are often tricked and their fear and ignorance of the law is exploited. I hope this law is enforced.

Rob Tyler, Abu Dhabi

Well done, UAE. I feel so sorry for these poor workers.

How about an experiment to curb accidents?

We read a lot in The National about road safety. Well here’s an idea to try to reduce the number of car accidents.

The police must have the information about the nationalities of drivers involved in accidents. These figures should be published every six months in a league table so we could all compete to be the safest nationality on the road.

However, if one nationality is involved in 20 per cent of the accidents but only comprises 2 per cent of the population, then that’s not good. But suppose a particular nationality has 10 per cent of the population but is only involved in 4 per cent of accidents, then that’s is very good.

If this idea was introduced and publicised, we could easily understand which nationalities needed more training.

Hazard lights create hazard

I don't understand why some drivers put the hazard lights on when they slow down (Motorists in the UAE send out the wrong signal, January 11). That's what the brake lights are for. Or is it acceptable to randomly abandon the car in the middle of the road provided the hazard lights are put on?

It’s clear that the driving schools aren’t doing their job as these practices are widespread. Some of the driving instructors themselves are bad.

John Paul, Dubai

There is no penalty or consequence, so why would drivers bother?

Daniel Rose, Dubai

What I’ll never understand is how these people got out of driving school without developing the habit of using indicators. This, as well as many other hazards, could be completely eliminated if driving schools were not be so inefficient.

New drug poses a big challenge

The news article Drug labs being used in fight against synthetic 'spice' drugs (January 11) is timely and topical. In Turkey, for instance, many young people are falling prey to this synthetic alternative to cannabis. This must be fought everywhere in the world.

Concern over Netflix content

Regarding the article Netflix goes live in the UAE (January 8), I have come to realise that a lot of shows are missing. So I am not sure I'll continue my subscription after the first month.

Samia Iftekhar, Dubai

Check this out, but the content is not great. Much of the good stuff isn’t there, including The Walking Dead. I’ll keep using the American one.

DiCaprio is a versatile actor

The Revenant is a great movie and Leonardo DiCaprio deserves to be honoured (Golden Globes 2016: The Revenant and Leonardo DiCaprio lead awards, January 12). He has become one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. Apart from the spectacular cinematography, the movie depicts the strength of the human spirit and the will to survive beyond all odds.
