The Apprentice

The premise: The US property tycoon Donald Trump hosts the original version of this show, which normally pits white-collar workers against one another in marketing, sales and various other corporate challenges.

The winner: Gets to hear "The Donald" say "You're hired" instead of his signature phrase, "You're fired!"

Dragon's Den

The premise: Versions of this reality contest, which typically feature fledgling entrepreneurs pitching their ideas to a panel of investors in their "lair", have aired in Britain, Australia, Lebanon, Canada and Ireland.

The winner: Often gets an investment injection of money in exchange for a stake in their business, although some former contestants have complained the prize money came in the form of a loan.

Project Runway

The premise: Talented, struggling designers get a little mentoring as they create outfits fit for the catwalk, then face some of the world's toughest fashion critics.

The winner: Walks away with up to $100,000, another $100,000 worth of design technology and office space and an exclusive boutique in select department stores or fashion sites.
