A hiring survey reveals the number of new professional jobs on offer in the UAE fell by 12 per cent compared to a year ago.

Morgan McKinley estimates the number of jobs on offer decreased 9 per cent to 7,212 in the first quarter of the year compared to the last three months of 2015.

At the same time the number of job seekers grew by almost a third, quarter on quarter, driven by the hard hit oil and gas sector.

“It was a more challenging start to the year than usual,” said Trefor Murphy, the regional managing director of the recruitment company. “Overall redundancies have been on the increase.”

Still, not all sectors are in retrenchment mode.

The recruitment company sees demand in the consultancy sector as organisations look for advice on structural change.

“Consultants and consultancy firms are being used more across the board,” said Mr Murphy. “These are situations where firms are letting people go and at the same time kicking off consultancy projects as skill requirements change.”
