Limited edition Burj Khalifa stamp marks iconic tower’s 6th year

DUBAI // The developer of Burj Khalifa has released 5,000 limited edition stamps to mark the sixth anniversary of the opening of the world’s highest building.

The stamps, which are expected to be a hit with tourists and stamp collectors, shows the tower and its surrounding area in Dubai at sunset.

Visitors to Burj Khalifa will also be able to send postcards by using the world’s highest letterbox, located on the 125th floor.

“We wanted to do something to celebrate the Burj Khalifa’s sixth anniversary and felt that a commemorative stamp would be a unique way of doing it,” said Ahmed Al Falasi, executive director of group operations at Emaar Properties.

The developer designed the stamps and commissioned the Emirates Post Group (EPG) to print them.

“Only 5,000 will be printed and this will add to the value of them for collectors,” said Ibrahim bin Karam, EPG’s chief commercial officer.

The stamps cost Dh3 each and are available at post offices, retail kiosks at Burj Khalifa’s At The Top observatory, as well as on EPG’s website.

“Collectors from outside the country can order the stamps from our website,” Mr bin Karam said.

“Depending on how successful they become, we may print more in the future.”

Although many people are using email instead of writing letters, Mr bin Karam said the personal touch in written letters or postcards could not be replicated. “If you get an email from a friend most people delete it after reading, but that’s not the case with letters or postcards,” he said. “When you get a postcard from a friend it means more to you because that person took the time to write it and post it and that’s what makes it so special. That is what I hope will happen with these stamps.”

A post office corner will be introduced to At The Top.

Visitors to Burj Khalifa will be able to send friends and family a special souvenir postcard with the official stamp from Burj Khalifa.

Fahad Al Hosani, EPG’s acting chief executive, said his company was excited about the initiative. “Emirates Post Group is delighted to issue stamps on Burj Khalifa, which is a symbol of pride and the pinnacle of international achievement for the UAE,” he said.
