ABU DHABI // F1 fan Matthew Laurent got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend at Yas Marina Circuit on Saturday.
Hundreds of Grand Prix fans gathered at the Main Oasis area to watch Matthew, 35, from Birmingham in the UK, as he brought girlfriend, Danielle Cooke, 33, on stage and asked her to marry him.
Luckily for Matthew, she did not suffer from stage fright and said yes.
Matthew revealed he had secretly approached Yas Marina Circuit weeks ago and the events team from Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management agreed to help him plan the surprise in advance.
Danielle confessed she was totally in the dark about his plans and said: “I was really shocked and had no idea at all this would be happening.” However, she said that she was a “very, very happy woman indeed.”
Matthew revealed that his fiancée had no idea he was planning on taking her to the F1 Grand Prix, let alone making a public marriage proposal.
“She only knew we were attending the race when the taxi pulled up at the gates to the circuit this morning. I was really nervous just before getting up on stage, but now I am really thrilled that she said yes,” said Matthew.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.

The national orchestra
Abdul Jabar Qahraman was meeting supporters in his campaign office in the southern Afghan province of Helmand when a bomb hidden under a sofa exploded on Wednesday.
The blast in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah killed the Afghan election candidate and at least another three people, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak told reporters. Another three were wounded, while three suspects were detained, he said.
The Taliban – which controls much of Helmand and has vowed to disrupt the October 20 parliamentary elections – claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mr Qahraman was at least the 10th candidate killed so far during the campaign season, and the second from Lashkar Gah this month. Another candidate, Saleh Mohammad Asikzai, was among eight people killed in a suicide attack last week. Most of the slain candidates were murdered in targeted assassinations, including Avtar Singh Khalsa, the first Afghan Sikh to run for the lower house of the parliament.
The same week the Taliban warned candidates to withdraw from the elections. On Wednesday the group issued fresh warnings, calling on educational workers to stop schools from being used as polling centres.
