US student loan defaults on the rise

A new analysis of government data by the Consumer Federation of America found that the number of Americans in default on their student loans jumped by nearly 17 per cent last year. As of the end of 2016, there were 4.2 million Federal Direct Loan borrowers in default, meaning they have not made a payment in more than 270 days. That is up from 3.6 million at the end of 2015.

Britain’s unemployment rate has struck the lowest level for more than 41 years, official data showed on Wednesday as the country prepares to trigger its exit from the EU. However, a drop in the jobless rate comes alongside news of slowing wages growth. Unemployment for the quarter ending January 31 fell to 4.7 per cent from a rate of 4.8 per cent in the final three months of 2016, the Office for National Statistics said.

Nissan Patrol from Dh2,499 per month

Al Masaood Automobiles, the distributor for Nissan in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, is offering customers a new Nissan Patrol with monthly repayments starting from Dh2,499 per month; this applies to a five-year loan. The offer, which runs until the end of March, also includes five years’ warranty and five years of road assistance.

Aussies say goodbye to credit card perks

Australians accustomed to jetting off to Bali using reward points earned on credit cards may need to open their wallets to pay for the next holiday. A new cap on credit card transaction fees that comes into force on July 1 means there will be less revenue to fund lavish award programmes. Australia & New Zealand Banking Group announced earlier this month it will stop offering higher-points earning American Express cards alongside its Visa cards. Other lenders are likely to follow suit.
