Global smartphone manufacturers are trying to increase their market share by offering new products in a not so favourable environment, where the industry is struggling with longer upgrade cycles and weaker consumer demand.
Around 310.8 million smartphones were shipped in the three months ending March 31, which marked the sixth consecutive quarter of decline, according to Massachusetts-based researcher International Data Corporation.
Last year was one of the worst in the history of the phone industry as shipments dropped 4.1 per cent year-on-year.
“The 4.1 per cent decline in 2018 has been an eye-opener to the market as it signals the biggest decline we have witnessed since the arrival of the modern-day smartphone,” said Anthony Scarsella, research manager at IDC.
The latest entrant to the industry is Chinese manufacturer OnePlus’ 7 series that was simultaneously unveiled in Bangalore, New York and London on Tuesday. The flagship device is the OnePlus 7 Pro – a strong contender against Samsung’s S10, launched in February this year, and Apple’s iPhone XR that hit the shelves in September last year.

Who added the most juice?
OnePlus 7 Pro comes with a 4,000 milli-Ampere hours fast-charging battery, more than enough juice for a full day of phone use. However, fans of wireless charging must be disappointed as this feature is missing in the new series and OnePlus shows no intention of including this option in the near future. Samsung S10 featured a high-density 3,400-mAh battery and offers wireless charging. Apple’s XR is trailing behind both Samsung and OnePlus, with smaller 2,942-mAh battery but offers the option of wireless charging.
How much does it cost?
Targeting high-end but budget-conscious consumers, OnePlus has priced 7 Pro from Dh2,560 (128GB) to Dh3,029 (256GB) - still economical when compared to its nearest rivals. The S10 starts at nearly Dh3,050 (128GB), whereas famously pricey Apple offers the iPhone XR, starting at 64GB of capacity, at Dh2,800.
How about the display?
The OnePlus 7 Pro, which weighs 206 grammes, offers a bigger screen than its closest rivals. It comes with a 16.9 centimetre full AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display with a QHD+ resolution that provides a more detailed and improved viewing experience. An AMOLED display ensures the illumination of each pixel, resulting in a brighter display. The Samsung Galaxy S10 has 15.5cm curved dynamic AMOLED display for an immersive viewing and its body weighs 157g. Apple meanwhile comes with 15.5cm all-screen LCD multi-touch display and weighs nearly 194g.
When is the 7 Pro available in the UAE?
Availability of the 7 Pro is officially not confirmed yet, but it is expected to be available online in the Middle East in the first week of June. OnePlus does not have a physical presence in the region and the company said the phone will be available on all major online shopping platforms.
How big is the camera?
The OnePlus 7 Pro comes with a powerful 48-megapixel (MP) triple-lens set up, covering a wide range of focal lengths to meet users’ every need when it comes to taking pictures. With 7 Pro, OnePlus also introduces a smart pop-up front camera module. Samsung’s S10 has three rear-facing cameras - with telephoto and wide-angle lenses of 12MP each and ultra-wide lens of 16MP – with one in the front. Whereas Apple’s iPhone XR comes with a 12MP rear and 7MP front camera.

Iran has sent five planeloads of food to Qatar, which is suffering shortages amid a regional blockade.
A number of nations, including Iran's major rival Saudi Arabia, last week cut ties with Qatar, accusing it of funding terrorism, charges it denies.
The land border with Saudi Arabia, through which 40% of Qatar's food comes, has been closed.

Farage on Muslim Brotherhood
Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.

Your rights as an employee
The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.
The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.
If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.
Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.
The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.
Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
