The Arab world's biggest TV network has apologised for screening a film that contained scenes of nudity.
MBC, which is based in Dubai, said it mistakenly broadcast a unedited version of the movie Into the Wild on its MBC Max channel.
The broadcast, which coincided with the Eid holidays, prompted many viewers to call for a boycott of the station.
Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn, is rated "R" or "restricted" in the US, due to bad language and several scenes involving nudity.
The network issued an apology to its viewers, and said it was launching an investigation into the matter. It said the issue may have been down to a move to "tapeless" digital broadcasts, or to "unintentional human error".
"MBC MAX would like to apologise to its viewers for any cause of embarrassment that they were put under," said Ali Jaber, group TV director at MBC Group.
Many users turned to social media to vent their anger at the explicit content.
There were more than 900 messages appended "#stop2mbc" on Twitter, although some postings said that they did not object to the broadcast of the film.
