DUBAI // A smartphone app designed to make travelling easier for Muslims by rating and sharing the locations of restaurants and shops that sell halal food has been launched.
The HalalTrip app, which has an English and Arabic interface, also shares information on prayer times, bringing together two essential travel resources.
It also allows users to upload photos of halal dishes and eateries for comment.
More than 50 restaurants in countries such as Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Austria and Peru have been rated in the past three months.
As well as prayer times around the world, the app also indicates the direction of Mecca.
Other features, including city guides and hotel booking, will be added.
“We want to make it easier and more fun for people to plan trips, and discover very important things that influence their travelling decisions such as places to eat along their journey,” said Fazal Bahardeen, chief executive of HalalTrip.
HalalTrip is available as a free download from Apple’s iTunes store and the Google Play app store.
