Expo 2020 is set to deliver a Dh89 billion boost to the economy, raising the country’s GDP, providing 277,000 new jobs and giving a fillip to the small and medium sized enterprise (SME) community.

The economic effect was outlined at Sharjah Tatweer Forum, an event that focuses on the opportunities offered by Expo 2020.

“China and India are among our biggest trading partners and our trade with Africa has increased 600 per cent since 2000,” said Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State and the managing director of the Expo 2020 Executive Body.

The minister spoke on the theme of the Expo, “Connecting minds, creating the future”.

“Our unique geographic location connects us to a third of the world through a four-hour flight and two-thirds of the world through an eight-hour flight,” she said.

Opportunities in the tourism sector also featured prominently at the event, with the minister underlining how the UAE has become an important international competitor with more than 95,000 hotel rooms and 11 million tourists in 2012.
