Arabtec’s board has elected the powerful Abu Dhabi businessman Mohamed Thani Al Rumaithi as the company’s new chairman.
Mr Al Rumaithi is the chairman of the Unilever offshoot Thani Murshid Unilever as well as the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
A well-known figure in the higher echelons of business and Abu Dhabi society, Mr Al Rumaithi also holds a long list of chairmanships and other titles. These include chairman at National Marine Dredging, chairman at Thani Murshid Establishment and independent non-executive director at the food manufacturer Agthia Group.
His business interests have led him also to take on positions such as chairman at the Federation of the UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry and he is on the board of directors at Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development, Emirates Competitiveness Council, the US UAE Business Council, and the UK UAE Business Council.
A keen sports fan, he is also chairman at the Al Jazeera Sports and Cultural Club, vice president of the UAE National Football Federation and he is on the board of directors at Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
“This is one of the top guys in Abu Dhabi business circles,” said one Abu Dhabi-based businessman who asked not to be named.
“Everybody knows this name. And he is connected to all the most powerful names in the capital.”
Mr Al Rumaithi replaces another powerful businessman, Khadem Al Qubaisi, as Arabtec chairman after Mr Al Qubaisi was not included on a list of board nominees last month.
Mr Al Qubaisi, who led Arabtec during the company's aggressive expansion in 2014 as well as last year's share crisis and the shock departure of the former managing director Hasan Ismaik, has left a number of key Abu Dhabi business roles recently.
Last month he stepped down as the chairman of the Abu Dhabi developer Aabar Properties and managing director of Abu Dhabi government investment firm Ipic.
