The Dubai developer Damac is turning its architecture upside-down with a villa concept in its flagship master development Akoya that puts an infinity swimming pool on the first floor.
Damac says the “inverted” XV Villas plan, announced at Cityscape Dubai 2016, feature living spaces on the first floor that open to an infinity pool that flows to the ground-level pool.
The villas border the community’s 18-hole golf course and lake.
Damac also announced that 1,350 units at Akoya would be delivered to investors next month. About 450 luxury villas and town houses, spanning four clusters – Silver Springs, Queen Meadows, Brookfield, and Whitefield – are completed. The 11 type of villas and town houses range from three to six-bedrooms, with many directly facing the international golf course in the community.
Ziad El Chaar, the managing Director of Damac Properties said: “Akoya is our first master development in the UAE and the delivery of units to their owners marks a major milestone for us and demonstrates our ability to deliver a project of such complexity and size.”
In July, the company announced the launch of Akoya Imagine villas at its Oxygen community in Dubai, which it said were more colourful properties with low community fees aimed at millennials. These went on sale starting at Dh1.2m for the smallest units and sold out within a few weeks. It also said it would start selling off plots of land at Oxygen, with the smallest starting at Dh600,000. Buyers would have 10 years to build on them.
A spokesman for Damac said that buying a plot, as opposed to a villa, would allow buyers to build their own units “to personal preferences and tastes”.

Cheat’s nigiri

This fusion dish combines Asian fried rice with a western omelette. To make, fry cooked and cooled sushi rice with chopped vegetables such as carrot and onion and lashings of sweet-tangy ketchup, then wrap in a soft egg omelette.
Deconstructed sushi salad platter
This makes a great, fuss-free sharing meal. Arrange sushi rice on a platter or board, then fill the space with all your favourite sushi ingredients (edamame beans, cooked prawns or tuna, tempura veggies, pickled ginger and chilli tofu), with a dressing or dipping sauce on the side.

Terror attacks in Paris, November 13, 2015
- At 9.16pm, three suicide attackers killed one person outside the Atade de France during a foootball match between France and Germany
- At 9.25pm, three attackers opened fire on restaurants and cafes over 20 minutes, killing 39 people
- Shortly after 9.40pm, three other attackers launched a three-hour raid on the Bataclan, in which 1,500 people had gathered to watch a rock concert. In total, 90 people were killed
- Salah Abdeslam, the only survivor of the terrorists, did not directly participate in the attacks, thought to be due to a technical glitch in his suicide vest
- He fled to Belgium and was involved in attacks on Brussels in March 2016. He is serving a life sentence in France
