People can use the new Razr to connect to their personal computers at home using the internet. But isn't there an app for this already on other smartphones, such as the iPhone? Motorola Mobility has revived its best-selling mobile phone of the mid-2000s to challenge today's sleek smartphones. Razr phones were launched back in 2004 and became the best-selling flip-phone handset, with more than 100 million units sold.
The latest Razr mobile phone, which costs Dh2,599 (US$707.55), does not have the same clam-shell shape as its predecessors. Measuring just 7.1 millimetres thick, it is one of the thinnest smartphones on the market. Apple's iPhone, by comparison, is 2mm thicker.
The Razr runs on Google's Android software system, which comes as no surprise because the internet search giant is in the process of buying Motorola Mobility.
Owners of the latest Razr can set up their smartphone to connect over the internet to their personal computer at home.
This allows users to access work files, music, pictures and movies on-the-go, and freeing up memory space on the mobile. It helps that the Razr has a fairly large, high-definition screen, measuring 4.3 inches.
But the major downside of phones that run Android is that their battery lives often last only a day if used on their default energy settings.
Users regularly have to change the settings, tweaking numerous options such as screen brightness to prolong the battery life.
This can be frustratingly cumbersome and time-consuming.
In an attempt to circumvent this, Motorola has created a "smart" function that automatically adjusts the power-saving settings according to the phone's usage .
The Razr's best new feature, though, will help those who like to frequent the UAE's beaches and pools: a splash-guard coating that encases the mobile and ensures it has a waterproof exterior.
