Ramadan 2020: car deals you can access remotely in coronavirus times

With coronavirus lockdown and precautionary measures in place across the globe and the world economy in recession, buying a new car is probably not top of the priority list for most people.
However, car dealerships in the UAE are adapting to the physical distancing environment by rolling out virtual showrooms, home delivery test drives and pickup maintenance services. Now, with the start of Ramadan – a time when dealerships offer perks such as price reductions, zero financing and free maintenance – it could be an opportunity to encourage buyers to take advantage of current deals and spur the car market amid challenging times.

“This period of time will actually help consumers make a better decision. The market as well will throw out better offers … so it’s a great opportunity for the consumer to get a better deal,” says Jorge Bialade, the general manager of YallaMotor, a subsidiary of the Middle East jobs site Bayt.com.

A recent report from the car classifieds site found that Covid-19 has had several effects on GCC car buyers' purchasing decisions. Sixty per cent of 1,200 respondents said they would now consider buying a car online rather than visiting a showroom. More than 80 per cent said they would test drive a car at home, as long as the vehicle has been sanitised. Car buyers are also taking more time to make a purchase; 39 per cent said they would now take up to three months to decide, while 65 per cent last year said they only needed a month.

The good news for sellers is that reduced prices is the main factor influencing the decision to buy a car for 74 per cent of those polled. Attractive loan options are important for 11 per cent and complimentary services such as free insurance or a service contract for 10 per cent, the report found.
Although consumers may be hesitant to make big purchasing decisions in this time of uncertainty, Mr Bialade says people should look towards the future.
"The lockdown is not something that's going to last forever," he says. "We will eventually be going to the office, getting groceries, meeting our friends and so on and so forth."

'The worst thing you can eat'

Trans fat is typically found in fried and baked goods, but you may be consuming more than you think.

Powdered coffee creamer, microwave popcorn and virtually anything processed with a crust is likely to contain it, as this guide from Mayo Clinic outlines:

Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.

Snacks - Potato, corn and tortilla chips often contain trans fat. And while popcorn can be a healthy snack, many types of packaged or microwave popcorn use trans fat to help cook or flavour the popcorn.

Fried food - Foods that require deep frying — french fries, doughnuts and fried chicken — can contain trans fat from the oil used in the cooking process.

Refrigerator dough - Products such as canned biscuits and cinnamon rolls often contain trans fat, as do frozen pizza crusts.

Creamer and margarine - Nondairy coffee creamer and stick margarines also may contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
