More makers have been coming out with gadgets that take the features of a phone and merge them with a wristwatch.

How do watch phones work?

Some models, including the US$200 (Dh734) W Phonewatch from Kempler & Strauss, are Bluetooth-enabled. This means you can hear the conversation and talk back by using an in-ear or in-car Bluetooth device, rather than speaking at your wrist.

But how do you answer a call?

Most now feature a touch screen where you simply tap the face of a watch to answer or hang up on a caller. And some, such as LG's GD910 3G Watch Phone, include different faces in case you have a preference for swiping either up, or down, on a touchscreen.

Do they only work by touching the screen?

No. Merlin Digital sells M70 Watch Phone for Dh1,250, which has a touch screen that works by using a small stylus.

The screens must be pretty tiny on these, though.

Yes, they can be. LG's Watch Phone only gives you 3.3cm of space to play with, although it also features a built-in camera for taking photos and can read back text messages or make video calls. "And of course, it tells the time," the company says.
