Rajesh Kumar, the chief executive of MyHiringClub.com, talks about the recruitment of MBA graduates in India.

q What kinds of careers are in vogue with MBA students?

a Graduates today are preferring sales, finance and human resource jobs. Finance is considered a steady job option. Salaries are also getting better in the sector, whereas in sales it's all bonus-based.

But is an MBA still worth the investment?

Undoubtedly studying in reputed institutes is worth the investment - in both monetary and time wise. It is worth noting, however, that every year, institutes are increasing their fees. Today an average fee for studying for an MBA in India in a good B-school is around US$10,000 (Dh36,731) per year, but the fee for a less-reputable institute is about half of that.

Is it easier to place those candidates who have an MBA?

Naturally those graduates with a decent MBA get a head start. The syllabus for MBA courses by the All India Council for Technical Education is very comprehensive and suitable for those who are looking for a career in management. During the entire study period, students' skills set are developed and nurtured, and this is a major selling point when placing MBA candidates. The school's reputation also helps students to find employment.

Do employers value MBAs?

Satisfaction with MBA-qualified employees and the skills they bring to a company remain high. According to our findings, almost all employers feel satisfaction with their MBA-trained employees. Our clients report that compared with other employees at the same job level, employees with an MBA degree demonstrate much higher abilities in many areas - such as management strategy, innovation, strategic skills, knowledge of general business functions, decision-making processes and, of course, leadership. Generally master's qualification gives you an extra edge.

Has the MBA suffered devaluation with recruiters?

The only thing that has changed is the fact that us recruiters have started preferring to place candidates from reputable institutes because clients are requesting these kind of graduates. These candidates are likely to be better qualified for the job and are not likely to switch jobs frequently.

Apart from the educational aspect, are networks created in business schools important?

Absolutely. In India, good networks are essential for graduates, as they are going to help you get a top job in decent organisations, and help you to create a career. In fact, employers prefer hiring candidates whom they know very well - at any level of recruitment.

What attributes are you looking for in executive recruitment?

Our clients always look for loyalty and enthusiasm along with ability to adapt, improvise and overcome unexpected difficulties. These are the attributes which we are always trying to find in a fresh crop of MBA graduates.
