Etihad Airways has hired a new general manager in Switzerland.

Gianni Tronza will lead commercial operations from Zurich. He replaces Alessandro Liverani, who will lead the airline’s sales team from Geneva and will also take part in commercial cooperation projects with Etihad’s network partner, Alitalia.

Mr Tronza worked for American Airlines for the past 15 years. He was the regional sales director in the north-east United States and Canada.

He was also the regional director for a number of European countries including Switzerland, Germany, and Italy.

Before joining American Airlines, Mr Tronza worked with the defunct Crossair and with British Airways

Etihad owns minority stakes in a number of European carriers including airberlin, Aer Lingus, Air Serbia and Alitalia, in which it bought a 49 per cent stake earlier this month.

It also holds a 33.3 per cent stake in the Switzerland-based Etihad Regional, formerly known as Darwin Airline.
