Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) awarded a Dhs1.1bn ($300m) contract for the fourth phase of the H station at Al Aweer to a consortium of Germany’s Siemens and Egyptian utilities developer Elsewedy, raising the total installed capacity of the facility to 2,811MW,
“The turbines are expected to be operational in phases starting from February 29, 2020 and ending on 30 April 2020,” Dewa managing director and chief executive Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said in a statement on Wednesday.
The project would test, supply and commission three gas turbines with a total capacity of 815MW, he added.
Dubai, which generates 98 per cent of its electricity from natural gas has over four Gigawatts of power projects in the pipeline, with 10.2GW of total production capacity for electricity and 470 million Imperial gallons per day of desalinated water, according to Dewa.
Egyptian developer Elsewedy would carry out the construction works associated with the engineering, procurement and construction contract, with Siemens set to deliver “three F-class turbines with 60 per cent efficiency” as well as the electricity generator to see the project through completion by 2020, Dietmar Siersdorfer Siemens’ regional chief executive said in an interview.
“When this power station is completed, we have a share of around 70pc of the total power generation in Dubai with Siemens technology,” he added.
Last June, Dewa signed a 12-year operating plant service agreement worth Dhs1.7bn with the German firm that included maintenance works and gas-turbine rehabilitation for the Al Aweer plant as well as for the second phase of the K-station at Jebel Ali power and desalination facility.
Siemens is also currently undertaking a 700MW expansion of the M-station in Jebel Ali, which upon completion would reach a total installed capacity for 2.885MW. The facility was on schedule for completion by 2018, according to a Siemens spokeswoman.
In November The National reported Siemens, Europe's largest industrial conglomerate, created a global division catering to airports, cargo and logistics in Dubai in conjunction with a digital platform, or industrial internet of things, near the Dubai Expo 2020 site. The new unit will be operational from the first quarter of 2018.

The flights
Emirates and Etihad fly to Johannesburg or Cape Town daily. Flights cost from about Dh3,325, with a flying time of 8hours and 15 minutes. From there, fly South African Airlines or Air Namibia to Namibia’s Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport, for about Dh850. Flying time is 2 hours.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
