The author and philosopher Deepak Chopra is coming to the UAE next week for two events on Tuesday and Wednesday. The world-renowned guru will give lectures for all audiences in Dubai and for business leaders in Abu Dhabi.
Here, he shares some of his views on developing visionary leadership skills and tapping into the "global brain".
One of the greatest skills of a strong leader is charisma. Stemming from compassion, vision, love, and focused attention, this is what allows a leader to create long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationships.
Charisma is created through three things:
. Be completely present in the moment. Make those you interact with feel that they are the most important person in that moment.
. Be responsive to feedback but immune to both criticism and flattery. You will not be offended by criticism, and your actions will not be influenced by flattery.
. Radiate warmth through compassion, empathy, joy and equanimity.
A truly great leader operates from the soul level, inspired by vision and inner wisdom as opposed to greed.
In her core self she strives for alignment with the greater, collective society she serves. In this way, listening comes first, followed by comprehension, empathy, and finally action.
A strong team is one that has a shared vision, which is deeply felt by all members of the team. The team is also emotionally bonded, where interactions are free from resentment and jealousies and instead convey appreciation, attention and affection. Additionally, every member of the team complements the strengths of every other member.
Without a visionary leader, dissonance will resonant through the team's bond. The team may be capable, but it will not operate at its full potential when crippled by emotional discord.
In a world where collective problem-solving has been hampered by conflict, dissension, confusion, and mutual incomprehension, any experience that can enable people in groups to work, create, and achieve more effectively and joyfully together seems to be profoundly necessary - and important.
In this way, the Arab world leaders are no different to businesses or leaders around the globe, they too face challenges of combining varied or conflictive personalities into a shared vision. But they know how they want their country to be led now and how to sustain that leadership.
Leaders of all walks of life must first and foremost be tuned in to the collective - a true leader is the soul of a collective consciousness. In the modern age, a new form of the collective has emerged: the global brain.
Even though it looks like a fixed thing, your brain is actually a process, an activity. I like to say your brain is not a noun, but a verb. It is in a constant state of dynamic flux. New connections and new cells are being born, and as they are rewiring the brain something astonishing is happens, the brain processes reality. When new pathways are formed, the world becomes different.
Billions of tweets, texts, emails and phone calls have one thing in common: they are neural signals in the global brain. Social networks have the capacity to swiftly alter the global brain. On the surface most tweets are small, fleeting events, but stand back a bit and you'll see that a new identity is being formed. A global wave, that anyone can participate in, is being shaped.
The newly shaped global wave can topple the traditional barriers of religion, tribalism, nationalism and political oppression. What I'm saying isn't mystical or hypothetical. The destiny of the whole planet depends on reaching beyond the narrow interests of rich nations and multinational corporations. A new power base that can deliver sustainability is the key to success from now on. A community of humanity needs to be formed.
