I have a query about parent sponsorship in the UAE. Can I sponsor my mother who is currently working in a school? I heard reports about a mandatory monthly salary of Dh20,000 to sponsor parents. Has it been implemented and what else is required? GK, Dubai
It is possible to sponsor parents, but there are specific rules that must be followed. If both parents are alive and still married, then they must both be sponsored and it should be demonstrated that they are dependent on the UAE resident child, and that there is no one in their home country that can look after them instead. With effect from the end of 2013, the sponsor must have a monthly salary of at least Dh20,000, or a salary of Dh19,000 plus suitable accommodation. The labour contract, showing the appropriate salary, must be attested by the Ministry of Labour as evidence. Suitable accommodation is deemed to be a property with at least two bedrooms and the tenancy contract must also be attested. An application should be made to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. Passport copies of all parties must be provided and the various charges add up to about Dh700. If the application is approved, a deposit of Dh5,000 must be paid. This is refundable once the visa is cancelled. It is always wise to check with the specific government department at the time of making an application as the fees and processes can vary.
