The final blade on the first offshore wind turbine for the farml located about 5km off the coast of Block Island, south-west of Boston, was installed on August 4. Technicians are commissioning the wind turbines, a process that will several months. The wind farm will be in commercial operation once commissioning is complete.

“Projects like the Block Island wind farm are the future not only of Rhode Island’s economy, but the whole country’s economy. With this project, Rhode Island continues to position itself as a leader and an innovator in the industries of the future,” said the Rhode Island governor Gina Raimondo.

Eric Crucerey, the project director of Block Island wind farm for GE Renewable Energy, said: “Today marks another major step in the construction of America’s first offshore wind farm. GE Renewable Energy is proud to be partnering with Deepwater Wind in this first of its kind project. We believe this historic project will demonstrate the potential of offshore wind in the US and create additional momentum for this clean and abundant source of power.”
